Chapter Eight

Shay had the worst sleep of his life. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw Bennett’s handsome face. The man was perfection come to life. His nose had a straight edge, and his jawline was all sharp angles. It looked as if the man had stepped off a magazine cover. It just wasn’t fair.

Shay had taken the day off from the ranch to get some shopping done. With the upcoming wedding, he needed to find something presentable to wear. A dress shirt and tie was as good as it was going to get. And it didn’t hurt to have something to take his mind off of one particular sexy man who made him see God the night before. Damn, he just couldn’t stop thinking about Bennett and how he made him feel. Had he known things would end badly, he would have gotten a better look at Bennett’s naked body while he had the chance. The way things stood now, he wasn’t sure when he’d get the next opportunity.

When he left his house, he drove the long way around to go by Bennett’s cabin, but his car wasn’t there. Shay had been a little disappointed, but it was for the best. What would he have done had Bennett been at home? After the way things ended last night, he didn’t reckon that Bennett wanted to see him, but then again they were mates. Maybe the stubborn man would be singing a different tune. Surely he felt something toward him. He had to.

Shay had just walked into the men’s clothing store and was quickly making his selections. He hated shopping with a passion, but with his parents gone on vacation, it was left to him to dress himself for this wedding. His mom was much better at stuff like this. He picked out a plain black tie, thinking he could wear that again, but couldn’t settle on a shirt. He had been debating between a light blue and a pale green one when he smelled his mate enter the store. Along with Bennett’s earthy, minty scent was the bitter stench of anxiety and fear. That had to be a good sign in Shay’s opinion. Maybe his mate was finally coming around.

Shay played it cool, not wanting to come off too eager. He’d met men like Bennett before who thought they were God’s gift to mankind. Hell, he’d even met women like that.

As much as Shay wanted to be with Bennett, he refused to ignore his needs and what he wanted. Bennett had to learn to accept his feelings for Shay and learn that them being together wasn’t going to be a onetime thing.

It would be easier if Bennett was a shifter, but he wasn’t, and humans tended not to believe in their kind. Shay wasn’t quite sure how Bennett would take the news. Bennett came off as a headstrong, all-business-no-play type of man, and Shay had to assume it wouldn’t be good news for the city boy.

“So…how do I do this?” Bennett sat opposite him in the small boat.
